How to Get Married in Texas: Your Guide to a Meaningful, Legal, and Personal “I Do”
By Richard A. Richardson, D.D.
Marriage is one of life’s most beautiful commitments. It’s not just a legal formality—it’s a sacred bond, a public promise, and for many, a deeply spiritual milestone.
If you're planning to get married in Texas, you have several ways to make it official. Texas law provides various options for legally getting married, whether you prefer a simple civil ceremony, a meaningful spiritual wedding, or a unique ceremony tailored to you.
As an experienced officiant, I've had the privilege of marrying hundreds of couples. I hope this guide helps you find the option that feels right for your journey together.
Option 1: Getting Married with a State-Issued Marriage License
Option 1: Getting Married with a State-Issued Marriage License
This is the most common route—and for good reason. It’s straightforward, affordable, and legally binding.
Here’s how it works:
✅ Step 1: Apply for a Marriage License
Head to any Texas county clerk’s office with your partner. Bring a valid ID (driver’s license, passport, etc.). Both of you must be present in person.
⏳ Step 2: Wait 72 Hours
Texas law requires a 72-hour waiting period before your ceremony—though there are exceptions, like for active-duty military.
💍 Step 3: Have Your Wedding Ceremony
This is where I come in! As your officiant, I’ll lead you through a short and heartfelt ceremony that reflects your values. Whether it’s just the two of you or a few loved ones nearby, I make sure your moment is memorable and meaningful.
📝 Step 4: Sign & File the Marriage License
After the ceremony, we’ll sign your license together. I'll then return it to the county clerk’s office to make everything official.
Once it’s filed, congratulations—you’re legally married in the great state of Texas!
Option 2: A Spiritual Marriage – Honoring Your Faith and Love
Option 2: A Spiritual Marriage – Honoring Your Faith and Love
Some couples feel called to a more spiritual or faith-based ceremony—something that reflects their beliefs more than legal boxes. And that’s okay.
In Texas, it’s possible to have a spiritual wedding ceremony without getting a traditional marriage license first. Many couples choose this route and then later file a Declaration of Informal Marriage to make their union legally recognized.
Here’s how it works:
💒 Step 1: Have a Spiritual Ceremony
As your officiant, I'll help you create a meaningful ceremony based on your shared values, whether they're faith-based, interfaith, or spiritual. You’ll receive a religious marriage certificate to symbolize your commitment.
📑 Step 2: Register your marriage (When You’re Ready)
You can visit the county clerk’s office to file a Declaration of Informal Marriage. Expect to answer questions similar to those required for obtaining a marriage license.
To file, you must:
Appear together, Be 18 or older, Present valid ID, Pay a small filing fee
Once you've filed, your marriage gets registered and becomes solid proof of your legally binding status, all without needing some fancy official license from the state.
This is a great option for couples wanting to honor God, the universe, or their beliefs in a simple and affordable way.
Why Legal Recognition Matters
Why Legal Recognition Matters

✔ Property and inheritance rights
✔ Health insurance & tax benefits
✔ Spousal privileges in medical or legal matters
✔ Parental and custodial rights
